The new year brings with it groundbreaking news in cannabis policy, business, and culture. As we wade into 2026, Cannabis & Tech Today is catching you up on the latest breaking news and industry developments.

Here’s what you may have missed over the last week:

Resolutions to Reduce Cannabis Use in 2026

A survey commissioned by Northerner.com found that 8% of Americans plan to quit or reduce cannabis use as a 2026 New Year’s resolution. Conducted by Censuswide with 1,000 U.S. adults, the results highlight generational and gender differences: 13% of 21-24 year olds and 12% of 25-34 year olds intend to cut back, versus only 5% of 45-54 year olds and 4% of those 55+. Men are twice as likely as women (12% vs. 6%) to make this resolution.

For those aiming to reduce consumption, 40% have unsuccessfully tried before. Over half cite improved independence and flexibility as motivations, while 47% expect greater accomplishment and 40% anticipate a more active lifestyle with better mental well-being. Access the full survey results here.

Skyworld Partners with Last Prisoner Project

On January 6, New York-based Skyworld, a cannabis brand drawing from Indigenous traditions, announced a partnership with the Last Prisoner Project (LPP) to support survivors of the War on Drugs and promote cannabis justice. Through LPP’s Partners for Freedom program, the initiative will raise awareness and funds, including via the Roll It Up for Justice program allowing dispensary checkout donations.

Skyworld is highlighting its White Apple Runtz (WAR) hybrid flower, boasting a 3.5% terpene profile led by caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene for citrus-sweet-tropical notes. A custom label designed with Case Study Labs features historical Drug War imagery to underscore ongoing impacts. Leaders from both organizations emphasized aligning premium products with reparative justice.

Nabis Acquires Humble Cannabis Solutions

Nabis, the top U.S. cannabis wholesale platform processing over $1B annually, revealed a ~$33M acquisition of Humble Cannabis Solutions (HCS). The accretive deal adds $13M in assets and ~$20M in gross sales, comprising a $4M investment from HCS, $4M in California distribution assets, and $5M in debt financing.

The transaction bolsters Nabis’ California operations, enhances support for brands and retailers, and readies the ecosystem for national expansion amid anticipated federal rescheduling—the first major policy shift in decades. More in the announcement. Visit Nabis and HCS.

Calyx Containers Expands U.S. Manufacturing

Calyx Containers is scaling its 17,000 sq. ft. Salt Lake City facility to onshore more packaging production, shortening lead times and stabilizing freight for operators. The award-winning company supplies over 250 brands, including Wana, with compliant solutions.

New independent studies show Calyx Cure technology preserves 630 additional grams of weight and 14% more terpenes per 100-pound batch over conventional curing, enhancing consistency and potency. From startup origins to multimillion-dollar status, details in the full release.

Wyld Acquires Grön Edibles

Wyld announced its acquisition of fellow Portland-founded edibles leader Grön, with the deal closing in Q1 2026 subject to regulatory approval. The merger unites two innovative brands to drive quality, growth, and category dominance.

Wyld reaches ~7,500 locations across 16 states and Canada; Grön offers 75 SKUs in ~4,500 spots across 9 states and Canada. The combined ~1,400-employee company will leverage shared resources for broader market access while preserving Grön’s operations. Sites: Wyld and Grön.

Hemp Industry Faces Major 2026 Federal Restrictions

Amendments in the Continuing Appropriations Act redefine hemp using Total THC (including THCA) at 0.3% post-decarboxylation, effective November 12, 2026. A new 0.4mg Total THC per-container cap bans synthetics like Delta-8/10 and reclassifies them as Schedule I.

Experts warn this could devastate 95% of the $28B market, forcing crop destruction, business pivots to fiber, and reduced access to full-spectrum CBD for wellness/medical users.

State-Level THC Sales Face New Limits

Effective January 1, 2026, laws in states like Tennessee (via House Bill 445) mandate Alcoholic Beverage Control licensing for THC hemp products (gummies, drinks, smokables). Violations risk fines, felonies, and revocation.

Retailers anticipate inventory reductions, closures, higher costs, and uneven availability due to local approvals, potentially slashing revenues.

Cannabis Stocks Roundup

Cannabis stocks traded mixed to lower over the holiday-shortened week ending January 6, amid post-rescheduling digestion and low volume.

The benchmark AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) declined about 1%, closing near $4.51. Major names showed modest moves: Tilray (TLRY) dipped slightly to around $8.96, Canopy Growth (CGC) eased to $1.16, while Aurora (ACB) fell to $4.17 and Trulieve (TCNNF) dropped nearly 7% to $8.17.

Gains appeared in Cronos (CRON) up 1.7% to $2.67 and SNDL up 1.5% to $1.68, with Curaleaf (CURLF) and Green Thumb (GTBIF) down 3% and 2% respectively. Overall sentiment remains cautious pending clearer federal implementation.
